How to make a Lesson Plan from Skill Deconstruction

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Now that you've done our skill deconstruction using the free downloadable template you have yourself at least 10 elements to make up drills that will fulfill the requirements for those drills. You might be asking yourself, "What is the best way to make a lesson plan out of the drills?"

You have two options to help you think of how to make a lesson plan or circuit for teaching the completed skill:

1. Sequential

You can teach them in order. Take a look at my deconstructed front walkover. If we were to build a lesson plan sequential. I would start with teaching the alignments, body positions of a lunge and move on to the T position. Finishing off with the opposite leg position and stand would make this circuit sequential. This is a great way to teach gymnasts that are logical thinkers as it is natural for them to process information in order.

2. Easiest to hardest

Teaching a skill from easiest element to hardest element is almost a natural choice for most gymnastics coaches. This option helps us create the most successes from the very start. It's great with beginner recreational classes.

Try both options and see what works best for you and your gymnasts. I would love to hear which one works best for you in the comments.
